Duties
1. With the aim of disposing of wastewater for the protection of underground and surface waters and soil and to prevent pollution, to determine and implement the principles and procedures for the elimination and control of pollution, along with the relevant targets, principles and pollutants.
2. To prepare legislation on prevention and control of water and soil pollution; to develop standards accordingly; To determine the discharge criteria, to give an opinion for the activities and facilities in terms of the relevant legislation according to the characteristics of the receiving environment.
3. In order to prevent water pollution caused by urban and industrial wastewater, to determine discharge standards by taking into account the quality standards of the receiving environment, to carry out studies on the restriction of discharge standards where necessary.
4. To determine the procedures and principles for the most appropriate use of domestic and industrial wastewater.
5. To carry out researches on wastewater treatment technologies, to establish standards accordingly, to determine the design principles, criteria of wastewater treatment plants, to approve process projects.
6. To determine the procedures and principles for the use of domestic and urban treatment sludge in the soil.
7. To determine the procedures and principles regarding the removal of sand, gravel and similar materials from flowing and dry stream beds, lake beds in order to protect water resources and prevent pollution.
8. To identify the sectors that cause or potentially polluting with waste and chemicals, as well as determining the contaminated or potentially contaminated sites, determining the procedures and principles for cleaning and monitoring the contaminated sites, and ensuring that they are put into practice accordingly.
9. To determine the procedures and principles regarding the reimbursement of some of the electrical energy they use in order to support the wastewater treatment plants operated in accordance with the Environmental Law and ensure that they are put into practice accordingly.
10. To collect, evaluate, analyze and report inventory information for developing and implementing policies regarding the management of wastewater and contaminated sites.
11. To determine the procedures and principles to be followed regarding the disposal of wastewater generated as a result of the activities carried out in the basins of the drinking and potable water sources and ensuring that they are put into practice accordingly.
12. To follow up and implement the regulations regarding the wastewater included in the special provisions and special plans determined in the water sources from which drinking and utility water is supplied.
13. To follow up the basin protection plans prepared for water basins, to ensure the implementation of such matters within the scope of duty and authority responsibilities of our Ministry.
14. To give opinion on measures and regulations regarding the protection of the basins from which drinking water is taken and substances that are objectionable to be supplied to the sewerage network as projected to be prepared by the Metropolitan Municipalities.
15. To carry out studies to prevent pollution in the industry at its source, to ensure clean production and the most appropriate use of wastewater.
16. To determine the procedures and principles regarding the reduction and recycling of treated wastewater at its source and ensure that they are put into practice accordingly.
17. To monitor national and international studies, to carry out studies for harmonization with the European Union legislation.
18. To prepare and have the guide documents needed in order to prepare and develop the legislation on the subjects falling within its field of duty.
19. To follow and direct the activities of Local Environmental Boards within the scope of the duties of the department.
20. To ensure cooperation and coordination between private organizations and public institutions and organizations in the subjects that fall within its field of duty.
21. To fulfill the duties assigned by the General Manager.
